Hi Vickie I completely agree with what you have said here I also believe it is also the article that is written with the photo that will help as well. I would love to try to help you with this mission as I believe every furbaby deserves a loving home.

On Saturday, I received a wonderful email from a man who volunteers for a shelter in Indiana. He'd seen the rescue groups article and wrote to ask some advice. In his email, however, he told me about a dog that had been on the website for 6 months, but after taking a "good" picture, they got 3 applications the very next week and the dog was adopted swiftly. Here is a completely independent example that proves my statement that better photography will get animals adopted. Period. Please, everyone...support me and help me in getting my shelter photography instructional book published, "Gimme Shelter". If you think it's a good idea to have such a book available, send me and email and tell me so. I can then show these emails to potential publishers, and therefor get it published more quickly. After all, a publisher's language is money, and they will be reluctant to publish a book for which they are uncertain of public sales. Send all emails to: vickieholt@cox.net

This article spawned a lot of criticism - and just as much support in opposition to the criticism - about the way that I "barked harshly" to get the dog to be still. Many people made it seem as if I were stomping around the shelter like a crazed maniac, striking terror into the hearts of all the animals with my loud and aggressive barks. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, we all know that misbehaving dogs benefit from the discipline of being shown "who's in charge". Television shows like "Dog Whisperer" and "It's Me or the Dog" tell us that even the experts agree that dogs need to be shown who's the alpha. So, when I'm trying to photograph a dog that's going berserk with impulse and energy, yes...I bark firmly to get their attention and make them understand they need to sit still a second and listen to me. It doesn't work all the time, but enough to be a useful tool. You can visit the article and see all the comments here: http://www.rescuegroups.org/blog/2010/04/29/photography-an-essential-tool-for-pet-adoption
